Iron Maidens Les 2 Alpes
Posted on May 14 2014
Iron Maidens/PARK-B-Q is an all-girls snowboard coaching charity event organised in Les Deux Alpes, France. This year was the third year for the event with the biggest, most successful turn-out yet. Every year the event donates all the money raised to Ski2freedom foundation, a charity that has an emphasis on the full meaning of the word freedom.
Ski2freedom focuses on meeting the specific needs and requirements, of young people and adults who have a disability, special need, life-challenging illness or who have suffered a trauma and need reassurance that a winter sport holiday can still be or become part of the journey back to recovery. Organiser and founder of PARK-B-Q, Emily James spoke about the event and why she chose to raise money for Ski2freedom "We all enjoy the mountain lifestyle and sports there is to offer here so regularlly- why not help open up these opportunities to others? This years event was a great success, we had about 45 girls (and actually some dutch guys this year too who got involved in the coaching sessions) all girls were serparated into ski and snowboard groups based on thier ability in the park. Girls then did laps in their groups with thier coaches and were encouraged to try new tricks and learn new things throughout the day. There was then an organised BBQ and bubbly lunch in the snowpark ,and in the evening an after party and prize giving in Smithys Tavern with photos from the day too. The turn out was amazing- I never knew there was so many girls in Les Deux Alpes so keen to chuck it in the park but everyone was really ballsy and despite there being some big stacks, I think nearly everyone leant some new tricks and had a great day..and luckily no major injuries!" Stupid clothing kindly donated some awesome prizes, along with Smithys Tavern, La Porte Da Cote Restaurant, Billabong shop, Alpoholics chalets, Planks clothing and Neilson Holidays. Volunteer coaches on the day included Les Deux Alpes park locals Jacob Roberts, Will Burrows, Helen Meredith, Mike Farghar, Jack Temple, Si Parfitt, Carl Williamson and Daniel Colas. In total just under 450€ was raised for Ski2freedom. Special thanks to all the volunteers and coaches who helped make the day such a success and also to Katie Brodie from Les Deux Alpes Voyages helped with advertising and promotion of the event.
